Thomas Virnich, born in 1957 in Eschweiler, is a prolific German artist working in painting and objects. Even though his methods and techniques changed over the years, Virnich's work is always multi-layered, never does he avoid the interchange between media and materials. In 1978, he started his education at the RWTH University of Technology in Aachen, and continued at the Academy of Fine Art in Düsseldorf, as a student of Eugen Gomringer and Alfonso Hüppi. The serious prominence of Thomas Virnich has started in his university years, with the Prize of the City of Aachen and his first individual exhibition (1983). In 1987, two years after his graduation, he was awarded with the prestigious Villa Romana scholarship in Florence, the prestigious stipend of Karl Schmidt Rottluff and - first of all - participated in the Documenta in Kassel. His work have been exhibited in a variety of venues, including the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin (1988), Neues Museum in Nuremberg (2002), Kunstverein Bonn (2005) or Museum DKM in Duisburg (2014), among many others. Since 1992, he is professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Braunschweig. Currently he lives and works in Mönchengladbach and Mallorca.
