Kirkeby’s works have been shown at many art exhibitions worldwide and are represented in many public collections such as Tate Gallery, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris. Per Kirkeby, born in 1938 in Copenhagen, is a contemporary Scandinavian artist, working as painter, sculptor, filmmaker and poet. He is among those, who discovered their artistic calling while devoting themselves to another discipline. Before transitioning to visual arts, Kirkeby received a masters degree in geology at the University in Copenhagen. Around the same time, in the early 1960s, Kirkeby enrolled at the Experimental Art School in Copenhagen, participated in the Fluxus movement, and, still as a geology student, participated in survey expeditions to Greenland. Along with his first participation at the Venice Biennale in 1976 (also 1980, 1993, 1997) came the recognition of his work in the art world; the increasing critical acclaim that followed the show resulted in exhibitions such as "A New Spirit in Painting" (1981) at the Royal Academy of Art, Documenta in Kassel (1982, 1992), Skulptur Münster (1987) or the group show in MoMA, "An International Survey of Recent Paintings and Sculpture". In 2008 and 2009, a major retrospective took place at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, and later traveled to the Tate Modern. The artist lives in Denmark, Germany and Italy. Following an accident in 2013, Kirkeby no longer paints.
