The modernist period of art extended roughly from the 1870s to 1945. The work created at that time is characterized by a revolutionary method of painting as well as a newly used colour scheme. These techniques stand in extreme contrast to all artistic periods that existed beforehand. Artists wanted to free themselves from the constraints and requirements of the art academies in order to focus on expressing their own feelings and sensitivities in their work. The modern art period was highly influential to all contemporary artistic movements and is considered one of the most important periods for the development of the arts.
