Matti Kujasalo, born in Helsinki in 1946, is one of Finland's most prominent artists. In his paintings, within the geometrical abstraction, the artist proposes a poetical combination of concrete art and constructivism with hard-edge painting influences. Kujasalo studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (1964-8), where later he taught (1977-88). In the late-60s, the artist intensively traveled, visiting the United States, and for the first time encountered the work of Ad Reinhardt or Josef Albers, who would have a greater impact on him than the emerging Op-Art. Kujasalo came to serious prominence in the 70s, with his debut on the international art scene, exhibiting at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1974), Young Talent Festival in New York (1975), Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1977), and eventually representing Finland at the Venice Biennial (1980). Today, his individual show is on view at the Galerie Denise René in Paris (from June 2015).
