  • The artist, who passed away in 2009, worked as a painter and sculptor and was one of the most important abstract artists in Germany.

Rupprecht Geiger b. Munich, 26|01|1908, d. Munich, 06|12|2009; painter and architect

As he opened one of the CARE packages Germans got after the war from US-citizens he found a marvellous red lipstick in it - whoever had put in the package we have to owe her or him Geiger's works, which are characterized by using the colour red in many different nuances ... because with this lipstick he made his first abstract painting. "Red", he later said, "is life, energy, potency, power, love, warmth. Red makes high". Growing up in an artist family Geiger did not follow his father's career at first but studied architecture in Munich. During the war while he did his military service Geiger worked as a war artist. Instead painting any battle pieces he produced images characterized by wide and colourful heavens and nothing more than an endless view into the landscape. After the war he first worked as an architect again but just to make his living. In 1948 he began painting in an abstract way on non rectangular formats. Later he also used airbrush and fluorescent acrylic paints for his works, which again and again approach colour as a theme. (CD)

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Rupprecht Geiger was born in 1908 and died in 2009 in Munich. An only son of the painter and professor Willi Geiger, Rupprecht was naturally immersed into fine arts and the particular nomadic lifestyle, which would have later impact both on his own migrations and artistic practice. Geiger doubled as architect and painter, originally educated in architecture at the Munich's College of Arts (1926-9) and State Architectural College (1933). His interests in drawing and painting emerged during the World War II, while he stationed in Russia. Eventually after plentiful political and private difficulties he came back to painting in the late-40s, and initiated the group ZEN 49. The artist claimed he tested out a number of methods, such as expressionism, realism, or surrealism before he made his name with abstraction and concrete art. Intensively displayed and collected, Geiger partook in numerous mega-exhibitions, including the Documenta in Kassel (1959, 1964, 1968, 1977) and Biennale in São Paulo (1959, 2002), among others.
