  • Recto numbered “9” upper right, “3” lower right and verso “1” upper right and “2” lower right in pencil

  • This gouache belongs to a series of costume designs which Fernand Léger made for the ballet ‚David Triomphant’ by Serge Lifar. It was performed first on 15 December 1936 at the Théatre de la Maison Internationale des Étudiants in Paris and reprised a few months later, on 26 May 1937, at the Opéra de Paris. Depicted here is the costume for King Saul. Léger not only realized the costume designs but also the stage set. Framed under glass. With slight traces
