ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

The renowned German painter known as G.L. Gabriel was born in 1958 in Munich as Gabriele Lina Henriette Thieler. Shortly after she was born, her family moved to Berlin, where Gabriel spent her youth, received formal art education, and where she still lives and works. Between 1976 and 1981, she studied under Karl Horst Hödicke at the University of Arts in Berlin; moreover, in the time of her academic studies, the painter set up her first atelier in West Berlin (1978) and exhibited her work at the Galerie am Moritzplatz (1979, 1981), one of the most influential venues of the day, the cradle of the Neue Wilde movement, neo-expressionism tendencies, and alternative culture in general. Throughout the 1980s, honoured with several scholarships and residencies, she has worked in the Dominican Republic, London, Japan and Chile. Aside from that, Gabriel has partaken in a number of exhibitions around the world, among the most important were "New York in the eyes of Berlin artists" (1987) at the Goethe House in New York, "New Generation from Berlin" (1989) at the Contemporary Art Center in Osaka, "Potsdamer Platz" in the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Berlin (1995), and many others.
