  • Jiri Georg Dokoupil was born in 1954 in Krnov (former Czechoslovakia). With his parents, after the Soviet invasion of Prague in 1968, he left to Germany, where he spent his youth. During the 70s, Dokoupil studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cologne, the University of Frankfurt and at Cooper Union in New York. In 1980 he founded an artistic group Mülheimer Freiheit, alongside Walter Dahn, Hans Peter Adamski, Peter Bömmels, and others. Active in 1979-1984, they were seen as the Neue Wilde of Cologne, as they shared similar neo-expressionist and transavantgarde tendencies. Dokoupil is well recognized as a painter, besides the more traditional techniques he is also inventing his own, using wax, soot, oil or mother's milk. Recently experimenting with soap bubbles, his paintings are close to the imagery of natural history and science. Dokoupil is featured in many collections worldwide, including the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Parisian Centre Pompidou, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the Sonnabend Collection in New York.
