Stephan Balkenhol, born in 1957 in Fritzlar, is a German visual artist, working mainly in sculpture and installation, but also in painting and drawing. He obtained his art education at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg (1976-82) under Ulrich Rückriem. After  graduation and some lecturing experience in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg, he has been employed as a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he has been teaching since 1992. With wood and bronze as his primary materials, the artist maintained a particular focus on a human as the major subject of his art. Most of the times Balkenhol's figures are isolated on inadequate pedestals, always anonymous, distinguished only by the outfit (also in titles), giving the melancholy, sad overview on the condition of the day. At other times, Balkenhol is flirting with the most vivid movements of 20th century art, starting with secession, expressionism and surrealism. His works are extensively exhibited all over the world, including numerous public commissions in cities such as Hamburg, London and Frankfurt, and are collected by museums and institutions: the Art Institute of Chicago, Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, The National Museum of Art in Osaka and Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, among many others. Currently, he is holding an individual exhibition at the Johnen Galerie in Berlin.
