  • The silk screen print series modern dreams was inspired by the form and the colours of the Eastern German image of modernity, which was deprived of the influences of American Minimal and Conceptual Art. The abstract motives of the works give the impression of eternity, since they could be easily connected endlessly.

Olaf Nicolai was born in 1962 in Halle an der Saale. Right now he is one of the most prominent contemporary German artists. He studied at the University of Leipzig and has a PhD in German Literature. In his artistic practice, Nicolai often examines the consequences of modernism, the questions of originality, repetition and production. He maintained a certain focus on a perception and expression, as it took place in his year-long project "Escalier du Chant" for the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich (2011). For last year's Berlin Biennale, at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, in piece "Szondi/Eden" Nicolai recreated the flooring and lighting of a modern shopping center in Lichtenberg, the borough of East Berlin. Again, modernism and it's heritage resonate in his mural for the Master's Houses in Dessau, "Le pigment de la lumière" (2014). Nicolai received broad critical acclaim worldwide and was featured in numerous collections and exhibitions, including the Documenta in Kassel (1997), biennales in Venezia (2001), Sydney (2002) Istanbul (2009) and Berlin (1998, 2014), among others. Nicolai lives and works in Berlin. His brother, Carsten Nicolai (alias Alva Noto) is an artist, musician and producer. (MD)
