ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1950 in Zetel, Thomas Hartmann is a contemporary artist and professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg (from 2005). Just after his graduation from the University of Arts in Bremen (1974-9), where he was a student of Karl-Heinrich Greune, Hartmann received a scholarship of the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (1979), later followed by his residency at the Villa Massimo in Rome (1984-5). In his work, the artist has manifested his interest in multiplication – depicting particles of reality in his painting, such as fragments of libraries or archives, Hartmann is often balancing between abstraction and figuration. Since his first exhibitions in the early-80s, his body of work has been featured in a number of institutional outings; some of his most recent individual exhibitions were held at the Museum of Modern Art in Bremen (2010), kunsthalles in Rostock and Erfurt (2011), Rosenbaum Contemporary in Boca Raton (Florida) (2013), Christine König Galerie in Vienna (2014), and the Galerie Georg Nothelfer in Berlin (1994-2015), among many others.
