ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Hugo Schmölz (*1879 Sonthofen, +1938 Cologne) was a German photographer. Between 1893 and 1896, he studied photography under Richard Eder at the Realschule Kempten. After graduating, he traveled and worked in many cities, including Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Mannheim, Berlin and Zurich. Even though he is widely associated with architecture photography, Schmölz was also active in portraiture, running a portrait atelier in Cologne around the early 1910s. Around the same time, Schmölz joined the Deutscher Werkbund. During the First World War, he served as an artilleryman, but documentedthe events at the front in his photographs. Following the War, he continued to work as a photographer and set up a studio for architecture and industrial photography (1924). From the 1930s onwards, Hugo was accompanied by his son Karl, who continued Karl's work following the event of his death in 1938. Combined, their works can be seen as a chronicle of pre- and post-war Cologne. In fact, these often served as indispensable material for Cologne's reconstruction following both World Wars. Hugo's work was exhibited in numerous major shows, such as "Fotografie 1919-1979. Made in Germany" at the Fotomuseum in Frankfurt am Main (1979) to name a few. Furthermore, father's and son's photographs are frequently shown in joint exhibitions, including the recent show "Beyond Architecture (1950-2014)" at the Neue Aachener Kunstverein, or the upcoming show "Architekturphotographie der 1920er und 1930er Jahre in Köln" at the Stiftung Kultur in Cologne (September 2015-January 2016).
