 Winfried Virnich, born in 1955 in Eschweiler, is a contemporary German artist, and a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mainz (since 1997), renowned for his abstract, textural canvases. Before turning to visual arts, Virnich educated himself in Music at the University of Technology in Aachen (1976-1980), and later conducted his studies at the University of Arts in Berlin (1980-7), where he attended the Free Painting class of Raimund Girke. Awarded with several scholarships at the end of decade, Virnich quickly began to exhibit his work and lecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster (1989-90), finding wide acclaim in the early-90s. His prolific period was marked with numerous shows, including the first mature solo exhibitions at the Galerie SchmidtBank in Nuremberg (1989) and Raum Für Junge Kunst in Cologne (1990). Currently the artist lives and works in Cologne and Mainz; some of his latest shows include venues such as the Kunsthalle Mainz (2015), Mies van der Rohe Haus in Berlin (2013), and Galerie Appel in Frankfurt am Main (2012, 2009).
