ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Siegfried Anzinger, born in 1953 in Weyer an der Enns, is a contemporary Austrian artist renowned for his work in painting, drawing, and graphics, often juxtaposing the aesthetics of neo-expressionism with religious thematics. From 1971 to 1977, Anzinger educated himself at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1971-77) and found first critical acclaim after his solo exhibitions at the Galerie Herzog (1976), Pressehausgalerie (1977), and the Galerie Ariadne in Vienna (1978). Within the next decade, the artist gained a serious international recognition fueled by his move to Cologne in 1982; then, Anzinger was invited to partook the Documenta in Kassel (1982), the Venice Biennale (1988), and shortly after he was honored with the esteemed Oskar Kokoschka Prize (1988). Besides his prolific work and plentiful displays, from 1997 onwards, the artist is professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. Presently, his art is included in the survey show "Avatar and Atavismus: Outside of Avant-garde" at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (until November 2015), and collections of the MoMA in New York, Albertina in Vienna, Modern Museum in Salzburg, and the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, among others.
