Arguably one of the most outstanding contemporary Austrian artists, Franz West, was born in 1947 in Vienna, where he died in 2012. His work ranged from sculpture, objects, and installation, frequently questioning the borders between fine arts and design. Already involved in the art scene in the early-70s, originally as the one of Viennese Actionists, West obtained a formal training a few years later, studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1977-83) under Bruno Gironcoli. Most of the time, his pieces fluctuate between abstraction and figuration, often tinkering with the idea of utility, such as in his "Furniture" series. Over the years, the artist was numerously awarded with the esteemed prizes of Otto Mauer (1986) and Wolfgang Hahn (1998), or the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale (2011). Widely collected, his oeuvre is still a subject to research and exhibitions, just to underline "Austria im Rosennetz" curated by Harald Szeemann, displayed in Vienna, Zürich and Brussels (1996-8), Documenta in Kassel (1992, 1997), or the Venice Biennale (1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2003, 2011), among many others. Currently, his work is on view e.g. at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (until October 2015), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (until November 2015), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Oslo (until February 2016).
