The prolific painter Thomas Lange was born in 1957 in Berlin, where he still lives and works. His work is often interpreted as the continuation of expressionist and neo-expressionist tendencies, not only in the medium of painting, but also in installations and site-specific interventions. His artistic path began at the University of Arts in Berlin (1976-82), where he studied under Wolfgang Petrick and Herbert Kauffmann. His early works, influenced by pittura metafisica and surrealism, were devoted to several group and solo exhibitions, in venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Nice, Goethe Institut in London, and the Academy of Arts in Berlin (all 1981). The prolific period was marked by the prestigious Karl Schmidt Rottluff scholarship in 1983, lectureships subsequently at the University of Marburg (1986) and College of Art in Berlin (1988-9), and his participation in the Venice Biennale (1990). The art of Thomas Lange is extensively exhibited and collected, more recently displayed in interesting dialogues with Sandro Chia, Enzo Cucchi, HAP Grieshaber, Rainer Fetting, and Günther Förg.
