"The Godfather of Conceptual Art, Master of Appropriation, and Surrealist for the Digital Age" John Baldessari was born in 1931 in National City (California). His art, spanning through painting, photographs, video, performances, installations, and multimedia pieces, needs no introduction – after more than 1200 exhibitions around the world, and numerous accolades such as the Guggenheim Fellowship (1986), Oskar Kokoschka Prize (1996), and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale (2009), he is perhaps one of the most eminent artists today. Baldessari permanently lives and works in California, where he obtained his art education at several schools, just to highlight the Otis Art Institute and the University of California in San Diego and Los Angeles, where he later taught (1967-70 and 1996-2007). In 1970, at the apex of Conceptualism, Baldessari alongside his fellow artists decided to commit "The Cremation Project" and burn all of their pieces from the previous era (1953-1966). Then, Baldessari started to incorporate text and found photographs into his work, promised not to make any boring art (1971), and invented his signature dots. Among the abovementioned 1200 shows, one can underline the Documenta in Kassel (1972, 1982, 2012), Venice Biennale (1997, 2003, 2009), and "11 Rooms" staged by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Hans Biesenbach at the Manchester Art Gallery (2011). Aside from his artistic practice, Baldessari has been active as an exhibition maker, curating shows at the MoCA in Los Angeles (1993), Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco (2004), LACMA, and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. (both 2006).
